Samuel H. Kaufman

The judge presiding over the first Hiss trial, Kaufman was removed after the trial when Richard Nixon and other conservatives called for his impeachment, saying he acted improperly by exluding the testimony of Hede Massing. Years later, Kaufman told a friend of Hiss's, "You and I both know that man is innocent."
